The owners of illegally built or altered homes are about to be given another eight months during which to declare their property and protect it from demolition, Kathimerini understands.

The deadline for all such properties to be declared and for homeowners to be given penalties to pay was February 2 but sources said that the Environment Ministry has decided to extend this until October 2.

According to the most recent figures, from September, almost 903,000 properties had been registered since the law allowing illegal structures to be declared was passed in 2013. Of those, the process of protecting them from further action had been completed for 283,358.
